WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) joined a bipartisan coalition of 50 U.S. Senators in introducing legislation for primary and secondary sanctions against Russia and actors supporting Russia’s aggression in Ukraine.
These sanctions would be imposed if Russia refuses to engage in good faith negotiations for a lasting peace with Ukraine or initiates another effort, including military invasion, that undermines the sovereignty of Ukraine after peace is negotiated. The legislation also imposes a 500 percent tariff on imported goods from countries that buy Russian oil, gas, uranium and other products.
“Putin launched an unprovoked invasion of Ukraine that has killed more than 40,000 Ukrainians,”said Senator Slotkin. “We need just, lasting peace for Ukraine – and that requires pressure on Russia not Ukraine. This bill does just that, with broad bipartisan support. If Putin refuses to agree to a ceasefire, Russia and its allies will face severe sanctions. Here in Michigan, we have a large Ukrainian population, and they are tired of watching their families endure this suffering, as are millions of Americans across the country. Enough with the games – let’s use every tool we can to secure Ukraine’s freedom and end this war.”
