WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), Bernie Moreno (R-OH), and Tim Sheehy (R-MT) introduced the Providing Rigorous Oversight Through Evaluation Of Concerning Transactions (PROTECT) Act, which would give the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) new authority to stop investments in the U.S. made by companies based in foreign countries of concern like China.
“Keeping sensitive American land out of hands of our adversaries – like China, Iran, and North Korea – is a critical priority,” said Senator Slotkin. “While foreign investment in the U.S. can support economic development, it can also threaten our national security. To address that risk, this bipartisan bill builds on my work in the U.S. House and gives more authority to the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S. to examine a broader set of transactions. That means we can stop land purchases that pose an actual risk to our national security. I look forward to working with Senator Moreno to get this critically important bill signed into law.”
“For decades, China has been allowed to weaponize America’s open markets against us, making massive investments in American critical infrastructure while politicians in Washington sat on their hands and did nothing. I’m proud to be joined by my colleagues in leading this bipartisan bill to finally give the President the authority he needs to enact his America First agenda and protect America’s industrial sector,” said Senator Moreno.
“Ensuring President Trump and his team have the tools in their arsenal to protect our people and our economy from manipulation by foreign adversaries is the epitome of America First common sense. Economic security is national security, and I’m proud to be in the fight to keep American technology, industry, and infrastructure out of the wrong hands,” said Senator Sheehy.
The PROTECT Act would give CFIUS full authority to review both greenfield and brownfield investments, allowing the Trump administration to halt foreign companies from constructing or acquiring new operational facilities in the U.S.
